Hello. I know it's been awhile since I've posted, but I guess I've just been waiting for something interesting to happen music-wise. Thankfully, it finally happened last night when I went to SPOM (Skate Park of Memphis) in Cordova, to see one of my all-time favorite bands: Silverstein! On Sunday, July 2nd, Kelsey, Heather, Chris, Jackie, and myself all drove down to the park at about 4:00 pm to get in line for tickets. Finally we got in at about 5:30 when Cancer Bats were going on. Sadly, they weren't really that great, so we just kind of sat out of the crowd.
When Mayday Parade, a post rock/pop band, went on, we decided to fight our way into the pit. For almost the entire set the crowd was weak as anything, though the music was quite catchy. After waiting through about 5 songs we just started pushing our way through on the last song, and somehow we got a pit started. It was crazy. The only bad part was some people who thought we were just being rude and shouldn't move at all. Thankfully, they quickly got the idea of what a "mosh-pit" was and decided to get out before there was any unnecessary bloodshed >;D Anyways, after Mayday finished it was time for the heavy stuff.
Alesana, a more metal, emo based band was what got the crowd pumped. Dennis, the frontman and vocalist, beat us down with dark screamo lyrics and lots (I repeat lots) of spit. He was one of those "get in your face" kind of guys lol. The band, on the other hand, seemed to hold their weight well. Seeing as I never really listened to the band before, I couldn't formulate a very critical opinion on them. They seemed decent to me though.
After Alesana came As Cities Burn. We were really hot after Alesana so we decided to take a break from the pit and walk around outside. I didn't get much from As Cities Burn, but I heard from fans that they were good! So we finally gathered ourselves and got back in for Poison the Well. They were decent, but it seemed as if their vocalist, Jeffery, started to lose his voice towards the end of the set. The best part of their performance, on the other hand, was when someone started getting beat up in the circle pit, and Jeffery told them to stop, saying that we only have "fights of hugs and kisses!" Without a doubt, that was the band's fruity moment of the night. They had good stage presence so they earned a notable spot in my book.
Finally, after an endless wait, came Silverstein! I loved their performance! Their presence and influence on the crowd was unreal. It made me really happy that they played songs that I knew, like Smile in Your Sleep, When Broken is Easily Fixed, and My Heroine. I even managed to crowd surf a few times during their set XD! Anyways, Shane's singing didn't seem to weaken at all, though my voice was shot after about 3 songs lol. They were very consistent with their records, almost better in my opinion. The whole crowd was pleased as well. There was also a guy who was leaving for Iraq in 11 days that got to sing on stage with Shane, I think it was very fitting. Their performance was very energetic and it was, in my opinion, unforgettable. Maybe I'm just a sucker for concerts of my favorite bands, but hey I don't care!
After Silverstein finished up, we actually got to walk backstage and talk to the band. They were all really nice and friendly. They even signed my Arrivals and Departures CD which totally made my night. We took Kelsey over to talk to Alesana for a little while, they were also equally nice guys. There's so much more that I can describe about last night, but I think I'll cut it off here. Needless to say, it was a great concert.
(PS: I have a friend with all the pictures we took, so I'll post them on here when I get ahold of them ~_^)
